Dick Thom D.D.S., N.D.

Dr. Thom graduated from the University of Toronto dental school in 1974 and practiced dentistry in Eastern Canada until moving to Portland. He graduated from the Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto in 1986 and, after some additional courses, from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in 1989. Dr. Thom is a full time professor at NCNM, teaching clinical and physical diagnosis, gastroenterology, neurology, and practical endocrinology. He is also a clinic instructor at Natural Health Centers, the teaching clinic for NCNM. Dr Thom has been in full time private practice in Beaverton since 1990. Since 1999, he has been lecturing in Canada and the U.S. to fellow physicians on the therapeutic benefits of homeopathic drainage and he also teaches a monthly class on this subject in Portland. He published one of the first books in the English language on the topic named Biotherapeutic Drainage using the UNDA Numbers. Dr. Thom has been studying in Canada and Belgium with a French medical doctor for the past 8 years to learn these therapies.

Dr. Thom's specialized practice focuses on the management of chronic diseases including auto-immune diseases, neurological conditions, endocrine disorders and cancer. The focus of his therapies is directed at the correct lifestyle choices for each specific condition. He refers to this as "nature cure" and it includes nutrition (diet) recommendations, certain supplements and herbs, proper sleep and exercise, drainage homeopathy, and hydrotherapy (use of water and topical castor oil). Based upon his clinical experience, he has written a book entitled Coping With Food Intolerances. It is available at bookstores, online, or in the office for $14.95.

Purpose, Practice & Philosophy

Dr. Thom coaches people in developing a new health paradigm, enabling them to access more of their natural resources for healing and prosperity. Since health is a reflection of balance on all levels (physical, emotional, spiritual, and energetic), Dr. Thom is committed to helping people overcome obstacles to achieving this essential equilibrium. To help you achieve your optimal level of wellness, he will assist you in recognizing the dietary influences, rest and exercise habits, and environmental factors that cause imbalances in your system.

His method of practice may differ from other doctors you have visited. Once you have scheduled your first appointment, you will be sent an extensive intake form to complete and return to the clinic. After you initial visit which will last from 45-60 minutes, necessary tests may be ordered. If you have had recent laboratory testing with another physician, bring them with you to your appointment or we may request those records as well. You will be given a detailed and comprehensive treatment plan to follow. Some will find the protocol arduous and challenging, but Dr. Thom has found that compliance is essential to the success of the treatment. Your commitment to change, therefore, is very important.

Natural Choices Health Clinic emphasizes a team approach. Dr. Rebecca Asmar works with Dr. Thom as his assistant physician. She may be involved in your care and may speak with you before or during your meetings with Dr. Thom. Also, she will be available to answer any questions that might come up regarding your treatment plan. At other times, a senior medical student working with Dr. Thom may be present during your office visit to assist with your health care.

If, at any time, you develop an acute illness, please call the office first thing in the morning so that Dr. Thom, or one of the other physicians on the team, can try to find time in their schedule to see you that day. Any additional chronic health issues you would like treated will have to be addressed during a scheduled phone appointment or your return visit for which their will be a charge.

Dr. Thom will make every attempt to adequately meet your expectations. Open communication between patient and physician will assure a successful working relationship. He relies on your own knowledge of your health and on your participation in your care to achieve your personal health goals. He has seen the greatest health benefits from those patients who willingly contribute to this partnership with him. Yet, he understands that the most important part of his practice is education. After all, the word "doctor" is derived from the Latin word "to teach." As a result, patients benefit by learning about themselves, their challenges, and their gifts.

"I am committed to educating and coaching you with respect to your health and wellness."

We look forward to your visit and furthering your health care needs.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dick Thom, D.D.S., N.D.
